Outpatient Opioid and Alcohol Detox Programs

Outpatient Detox For Substance Use Disorder

Middlesex Recovery offers a comprehensive outpatient ambulatory detox program specifically designed for individuals dealing with opioid or alcohol dependency. This program provides a safe and supportive environment for patients with substance use and/or co-occurring mental health disorders.

Understanding the Detoxification Process

Detoxification marks the crucial first step in the recovery process, encompassing medical and therapeutic interventions to manage withdrawal symptoms from opioids and alcohol. It is the gateway to further personalized treatment and long-term rehabilitation.

Opioid and Alcohol Withdrawal Management

Our program includes structured outpatient care through scheduled appointments or telehealth sessions, (at select treatment centers) tailored for patients who do not require 24-hour monitoring. A crucial aspect of this treatment phase is identifying a supportive person who respects the patient’s journey towards recovery.

Program Philosophy and Objectives

The path to recovery at Middlesex Recovery is a shared decision-making process, emphasizing the importance of psychological support through counseling, case management, and care coordination. A licensed medical provider personalizes and delivers pharmacological support based on the patient’s symptoms and substance dependency.

Stages of Opioid and Alcohol Detox

Pre-Detox Assessment and Planning

  • Initial Consultation and Treatment Planning: Before detox, we conduct a comprehensive assessment to establish the patient’s level of care based on the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria. This includes a review of the patient’s history, current medications, and development of a detailed treatment plan.
  • Support System and Home Environment Preparation: During admission, a team member will help you identify a support person. This support person can assist you throughout treatment. They will guide you in preparing your home environment. These elements are key steps for a successful detoxification process.

Active Detoxification Phase

  • Day 1 – Beginning of Detox/Titration: Outpatient detoxification starts with a provider visit, discussing medications and comfort measures, and reinforcing the importance of not driving during this phase. Patient safety is of the utmost importance.  Counseling sessions focus on coping and recovery education skills will begin as part of this phase along treatment plan reviews.
  • Day 2 and Beyond – Ongoing Management: Continuous monitoring and adjustment of medications are conducted, alongside regular counseling and check-in calls. This ensures the patient remains stable and supported throughout the detox process.

Post-Detox Transition and Recovery Support

  • Final Stages of Detox (Days 8-10): As the patient nears the end of detox, medication tapering and planning for continued care take precedence. This includes coordinating with other providers and setting up necessary support appointments.
  • Aftercare Planning and PAWS Education: Post-detox, the focus shifts to long-term recovery support. Patients are educated on Post-Acute Withdrawal Syndrome (PAWS) and coping strategies to manage symptoms and prevent relapse.
